Young Trees Don't Sequester More

By Robert T. Leverett - Cofounder, the Native Tree Society; The Sierra Club Guide to Ancient Forests of the Northeast Chair; MA Department of Conservation and Recreation

"Proforestation is a simple, inexpensive strategy: let mature public forest alone to continue sequestering carbon at high rates without the attendant losses incurred by logging during this period of rapid global warming. This is not to disparage forest management on non-public lands. It is essential for woodlands that supply us with forest products. There is no argument on that point. But during this crucial period of getting our carbon emissions under control, the public forests should basically be left alone to accumulate carbon as rapidly as possible. Where management in public forests is continued, the priority should be to increase the rate of carbon storage beyond what would happen through natural processes."
